A roll-up banner stand — also called a pull-up stand, retractable banner, or pop-up banner — is a portable display system consisting of a printed graphic that rolls up into a compact aluminium base unit. To display it, you simply pull the graphic upward and support it with the attached pole. To pack it away, the graphic retracts back into the base.

They are lightweight, self-contained, and can be set up or packed away in under 60 seconds. This makes them the go-to display solution for:

• Trade shows and exhibitions — GITEX, Gulfood, Big 5, Arab Health, Cityscape, and all major Dubai events

The most popular option. Aluminium base unit with a spring-loaded retraction mechanism. Available in widths from 600mm to 1,200mm, with standard heights of 1,800mm–2,000mm. Suitable for most indoor applications.

Heavier-gauge aluminium base with a smoother retraction mechanism and a more refined finish. Ideal for luxury brands, premium retail, and high-profile corporate events. The Hamidi banners used this format — the quality of the stand mechanism matches the quality of the printed graphic.

For applications requiring a wider display — up to 1,500mm wide. Popular for exhibition backdrops, hotel lobby displays, and large retail promotions.

Graphic visible from both sides. Ideal for placement in the centre of a room, at the end of an aisle, or in a high-traffic corridor where visitors approach from multiple directions.

Weighted base and wind-resistant mechanism for outdoor use. Suitable for outdoor events, forecourts, and covered outdoor areas. Not recommended for exposed locations in high wind conditions.

The graphic is the most important element of a roll-up banner stand. A premium stand mechanism with a poor-quality print is a wasted investment. At Sign Design Dubai, we print roll-up banner graphics using:

• Dye-sublimation printing on polyester fabric — the premium choice. Produces vivid, photographic-quality images with no visible dot pattern. Fabric graphics are lightweight, wrinkle-resistant, and have a soft, premium appearance. This is what we used for the Hamidi banners.
• UV printing on PVC — a cost-effective option for shorter campaigns. Sharp, accurate colour reproduction with good durability for indoor use.

Both options are printed at high resolution (typically 150–300 dpi at final size) to ensure the graphic looks sharp and professional at close viewing distances.

A roll-up banner stand is typically viewed at a distance of 1–3 metres. Design accordingly:

1. Keep it simple — one clear message, one strong image, one call to action. A cluttered banner is an ineffective banner.
2. Brand at the top — your logo and brand name should be at the top third of the banner, at eye level or above.
3. Large, legible text — body text should be a minimum of 24pt at final size. Headlines should be 60pt or larger.
4. High-resolution images — use images at 150 dpi or higher at final print size. Low-resolution images look blurry and unprofessional.
5. Leave a safe zone — keep important content at least 50mm from the edges and bottom of the graphic, as the retraction mechanism may obscure the very bottom.
6. Arabic text — if your audience includes Arabic speakers, include Arabic text. Sign Design Dubai can assist with Arabic typesetting and layout.
